On Wednesday, we has Ryann Aoukar come to speak to us about the process of an interior design project.  He introduced us to all the other disciplines involved with our profession.  Some of them, I could have guessed, but some of them I hadn't even thought of.  It seems to be a very long process, because of all the things you have to do/people you work with.  Based roughly on Mr. Aoukar's presentation, there are 12 steps (or maybe phases, rather) to completing a project.  That sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through to me! On one hand, that looks kind of overwhelming, that you control all of these components of the building, on the other hand, how fun!  I am one who loves working under pressure and meeting deadlines, etc. so I feel like from what I know so far (which, in all actuality, is still very general), I feel like think is a fitting career choice for me.

On Monday, we talked about sustainability in design.  It was interesting to learn how many things in an interior space can affect the amount of energy used.  We learned about different types of light bulbs that conserve energy, as well as how important the controls to those lights were.  Another thing we talked about what clearing during construction and how the easiest thing for one to do is just wipe out the entire area.  But we saw that not only is that unnecessary and harmful to the environment, but it leaves the site less aesthetically pleasing (which would be one of the overall goals for any designer).

Wednesday, Professor Mathews spoke to us all in 109 about interior materials.  He had us compare two clearly different rooms and then discussed with us the difference between integrated materials and applied materials.  I found it interesting to see how something so little as a material selection can completely change the feel/appearance of the room.  He introduced us to the name "Dorothy Draper" and places like the Eames Residence (which is made from industrial materials).

I found both of these days to be quite interesting as well as informative.  Both topics were so different from the other, that it was cool to see how much actually goes into the profession, and I feel as though it's safe to assume we haven't learned it all just yet. ;)

I am looking forward to the second quarter of 101.  Since we've started looking further into the career choices and possibilities, I find it all the more exciting.  I think I'm going to be a little more into residential work, but it's nice to know there are so many options in commercial, other than things like office buildings, etc (which I cringed at the thought of). I like the thought of great versatility in a career field, going into a possibly shaky economy.

I am also looking forward to the speakers we will have each week.  Each of us have different ideas about what ID is or what role we play in it, so it will be nice to have professionals come in and paint us a clear picture of what it really is.  I'm pretty sure some of us have already been taken by surprise by the work we've been doing in studio.  I think some of us thought that we were going to skip the crawl and go right to the walk, but I think through the information we will gather through the speakers, we will gain a better understanding and direction.
